Korean Singing Sensation IU Brings in Big Salary

IU Brings in More Revenue Than Any Other K-Pop Idol Star

IU Brings in More Revenue Than Any Other K-Pop Idol Star
Did you know that Charlie Pants Music teaches singing lessons to students in Korea and has several talented and rising Korean stars?  Singing Lessons are all done via Skype and students love it.  Take from Level 4 Speech Level Singing Teacher Leah Stone today. Check it out.

Surprising news has recently emerged regarding the well-loved singer IU, who is reported to have earnings over $10 million USD in the year of 2011. This startling salary has surpassed various idols prominent in the K-Pop scene, especially SNSD, Wonder Girls, and KARA. IU’s yearly earnings has confirmed her place as both number one in successful comeback and in the highest revenue this year.

On December 25, Gaon music charts placed IU’s “Last Fantasy” album, which debuted on November 29, as number one on their album rankings. Also, IU’s title song “You and I” placed at the very top on Gaon’s top ten singles chart in December, which was practically undefeatable through the weeks of November 27 to December 17. All of IU’s songs on her “Last Fantasy” album have placed within the top 20 on Gaon’s top 100 song list.

IU is already known to have recorded $6 million USD in record sales last quarter, but the newly revealed figure of $10 million USD annually has stunned a lot of people. IU’s last album, “Real,” which debuted on December 9 2010, had similar music chart dominance as “Last Fantasy” and her title song for that album was “A Good Day.” This single gained instant popularity due to IU’s amazing ability to reach three stages of consecutive high notes, an attempt clearly heard in the middle of the song, and this feature along with the song’s cute lyrics gained popularity not only amongst the youth but the middle-aged audience as well.

Here is IU's latest hit "You & I" she has a beautiful voice. Check it out.

Music Moment: Nathan Pacheco

Have you heard of Nathan Pacheco? Well you should.

Seriously you have to listen him sing.  It is truly beautiful. Good Luck Nathan.  I hope to hear you sing in person soon.
Here is his website

Here is a bit about him... in Nathan's words...

The audition process began and one hot, July afternoon (the day before Italy won the World Cup!) I was singing for producer Ric Wake and his business partner Bob Murray. At that time, Ric was working with Yanni, suggesting that he work with singers. It was perfect timing. Ric introduced me to Yanni and that started what came to be known as "Yanni Voices." We spent a couple years in the studio and then hit the road on a tour of about 80 concerts in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. They were 3 years of non-stop recording, writing, singing, performing, and learning what the music industry is all about.

All of this led me to where I am now.

I signed with Disney in 2009 and started working on my solo album. They introduced me to Leo-Z, who then became the producer of my album, and we worked 24/7 (with the exception of a cappuccino break for Leo...an Italian who fell in love with Starbucks) for a year with other great writers until we found what we were looking for. We recently returned from London, where we experienced the magic of Air Studios and the Philharmonia Orchestra. We're in the final stages of recording now, and everything will be fully mixed and mastered within a couple months. I can't wait for you to hear it.

Adele Vocal Surgery

Adele, the oober talented singer-songwriter of songs of the like of "Someone Like You", recently had throat-related surgery at Massachussetes General Hospital.  The singer is expected to have a full recovery.

read full article HERE or see below.  From CNN marquee blog

Full recovery expected for Adele post-surgery

After a series of cancellations this year due to vocal issues, Adele has undergone throat-related surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and the medical center tells CNN that the Brit singer is expected to have a full recovery.

In a statement, the hospital explains that Adele underwent laser microsurgery to put a stop to "recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage," which typically is "the result of blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture."

The physician who performed the procedure - who, incidentally, has also conducted a similar operation on Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler - is confident that the "Someone Like You" singer will be fine.

In late October, Adele canceled the remainder of her 2011 appearances with the announcement that she was planning to have this operation.
Earlier that month, she also pulled out of her 10-city tour in the U.S. due to vocal cord bleeding. She also postponed dates of her U.S. tour over the summer due to laryngitis.
Those who purchased tickets to see Adele at a 2011 engagement have been able to seek a refund via their point of purchase.
In the meantime, there's always "21," her lauded chart-topping album that has gone on to sell more than 2.5 million copies.

Just for fun let's give her song "someone like you" a little listen, shall we?

CPM Student Sings at US National Open on Saturday

Charlie Pants Music student KyleRok sang at the US National Open on Saturday in NYC. I am so proud of you Kyle. Way to go!

Leesburg’s Kyle Lambdin, 12, sings at U.S. Open

It was Saturday night at the U.S. Open in New York, and 12-year-old Kyle Lambdin of Leesburg confidently strode out to center court and belted out a super version of “America the Beautiful.” And when he threw in a couple of vocal flourishes toward the end, the hardened crowd of New Yorkers in massive Arthur Ashe Stadium loved it.

According to the Loudoun Times-Mirror, Lambdin won the spot by auditioning at Harlem’s Apollo Theater this summer. He has been singing since age 5, and was a semifinalist in a Kidz Bop talent search. And if you didn’t know, Kidz Bop CDs now compete with rappers and pop singers on the national charts. Kyle goes by “KyleRok,” does an interesting version of Cee Lo’s “Forget You” here, and has his own channels on KidzBop.com, numerous YouTube videos, a Facebook page and a Twitter account. It’s a lot of work being 12 these days.
So watch this and enjoy another future NoVa singing sensation:

Amy Winehouse Passed at Young Age of 27

Sad to lose such a talent so young. My thoughts and prayers are with Amy's family.

"Winehouse shot to fame with the album "Back to Black," whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse — with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos — one of music's most recognizable stars." (Today Entertainment)

Month-Long National Tour Kicks Off July 26, With Special Guests Anthony Hamilton and Mint Condition; Featuring ‘Opening Act’ Local Amateur Contest Winners
ST. LOUIS, MO (June 30, 2011) – Budweiser Superfest, the hottest party of the summer, returns featuring Grammy® Award-winning R&B urban soul singer Jill Scott.  Tickets for the month-long, nationwide tour are on sale at www.Ticketmaster.com and www.LiveNation.com.

The concert tour features Scott’s classic hits and songs from her just-released and highly anticipated fifth studio album The Light of the Sun, including the popular single “So in Love.”

“Budweiser Superfest is back and better than ever with Jill Scott’s unique brand of urban soul,” said Bryan Hammonds, Budweiser Brand Manager. “This year builds on the successful 2010 revival of Superfest as Budweiser continues to bring great concerts to music fans in cities nationwide.”

Scott will be joined by special guests, Grammy® nominated R&B singer Anthony Hamilton and groove specialists Mint Condition with music provided by DJ Jazzy Jeff and hosted by party starter Doug E. Fresh. Select markets will also feature performances by Dwele, Anthony David or Jon B.

Making a Difference Through College Scholarships
In the spirit of making a difference in local communities, Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch is celebrating the performances by donating $150,000 from its Foundation to the UNCF (United Negro College Fund); presented as $10,000 scholarships in 15 Superfest concert cities. The Civil Wars Concert Review

Remember me talking about this concert well I went and loved it.

The Civil Wars, a duo comprised of the beautiful Joy Williams and her sexy partner John Paul White, performed last night, June 29, at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado. With their matching black attire, her sexy moves, and his Johnny Depp persona, I was completely enraptured with just their presence on stage.  While their tight harmonies and emotional lyrics of pain and love brought a hush over the audience, I found myself holding back tears as I clung to every note from this haunting melodic duo.  The chemistry between these two was so fun to watch as they moved between playfulness, passion, and sorrow.

They will be returning to Boulder on August 12 to perform at the Boulder Theatre.  I will be purchasing my tickets today.

Opener was Rayland Baxter whose stage presence was relaxed and easy to connect with. I found him charming, his sexy voice full of desire, and his music enjoyable.  His signature sound was a clean, clear melodic whistle combined with his sweet poetic lyrics.

Amazing concert. I can not wait to see The Civil Wars again.

KyleRok

My student KyleRok went to the US Open Auditions in NYC this past week.  He is the cute boy in the blue shirt in line show here at on this video. How cool is it that he has sung on the stage at Apollo Theatre? Way cool.

I have told you before that he is a force to be reckoned with. He is only 11 years old and has a voice that will literally knock your socks off and then melt your heart.

He is also performing this Saturday at YouthFest in Brambleton in Northern Virginia just outside of Washington DC.  He has a great line up of songs including Journey, Justin Beiber, and Bruno Mars tunes.  Come give him support and I am sure we will all see him on TV singing at the US Open soon.

Way to go KyleRok.  You can see another post about him HERE.

Case Study: How Dave Matthews Band has Embraced the Modern Music Industry and Made Big Bucks

Dave Matthews. Click image to expand.
This Case Study is so informative.  Did you know that "In 2010, for example, DMB was the 3rd largest grossing tour in North America, after Bon Jovi and Roger Waters, and ahead of such names as Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas?" Read on to find out how.

Case Study: How Dave Matthews Band Has Embraced The Modern Music Industry In Extraordinarily Profitable Ways

Business Models
by Mike Masnick

Over the last few weeks, we've noticed a few of our usual critics attacking the basic claims concerning successful music business models, because some of the bigger concert tours this past year ran into trouble, and because some of those tours seemed to realize they were charging too much. Of course, it's unfortunate when people misunderstand basic statistics and what data shows. First of all, we've never claimed that concerts were the only way to make money in the music business. There are lots of ways to offer scarce goods that have nothing to do with touring. Second, the fact that some big tours had trouble -- and misjudged the market is hardly a condemnation of touring as a money maker. It just means that some tours misjudged the market. This is hardly a surprise. For years, many tours had underpriced tickets, leading to a valuable aftermarket for scalpers. But over the past few years, major acts and venues have tried to capture more of that for themselves, leading them to push the market ever higher. There was obviously a limit as to how high those prices could go, and people have started to figure that out. This is a good thing, not a bad thing.

But the key point to recognize is that just because some acts misjudged the market, that's not a condemnation of these other ways to make money. This claim reminds me of similar claims back in the early 1990s about the productivity of computers in the workplace. A few companies did massive implementations that were done poorly, and turned out to be way too costly. And with poor implementation and poor planning, the end result was that these new computer systems didn't increase productivity. Suddenly, there were claims and press coverage about how computers didn't lead to any productivity gain. The mistake was conflating a bad implementation with what would happen if you implemented stuff properly. No one here has said that "just touring" automatically is a successful strategy. That's because it's not true. Instead, a properly implemented multi-prong strategy, that fits with both what the musicians want and their fans want, can work quite well.

A perfect example of that may be the Dave Matthews Band. Slate recently did an article on the massive success of the band. A big part of that, not surprisingly, is a relentless touring schedule. However, as the article notes, DMB is making a lot more money touring than most people realize. It's consistently one of the top earning touring acts in North America, despite not being as "big" a name as the others on the list. In 2010, for example, DMB was the 3rd largest grossing tour in North America, after Bon Jovi and Roger Waters, and ahead of such names as Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas. And they did this with significantly lower prices than most of the other acts in the top 10. While tickets to Lady Gaga concerts averaged $98 and Sir Paul's concerts went for a staggering $138.49, DMB's average ticket price was $57.38. And, as the article notes, they did this in a massively profitable way, unlike some concert tours which cost so much as to have them losing money. On top of that, the band uses the famed Grateful Dead model for keeping fans coming back for more: changing up their songs each time, and having fun going off on different jams, that make each concert unique.

But, of course, it's not just about touring. The band has done its own version of CwF+RtB, with over 80,000 fans paying $35 per year for its fan-club (and the 80,000 number is three years old, so I'd imagine the real numbers are now much higher). That's $2.8 million from the fan club alone. Similarly, the band appears to sell a ton of merchandise. The article notes that, back in 1998, the band would sell $200,000 in merchandise per day, while on tour. Obviously, that data is way out of date, but the band seems to have little trouble coming with good "reasons to buy" for its fans.

I have no doubt that the usual critics will mock this, claim it's an exception, or somehow complain that this is somehow "bad." But it seems clear that it's working great for the band itself, and they're quite happy with it. And, really, in the end, that's what these business models are about. Finding the right mix for bands to connect with fans in a meaningful way, while setting up the structure that allows those fans to support the band. DMB seems like a perfect example of a band doing this on a massively large scale.

Chest Voice and Head Voice

I found this great blog post by a fellow SLS teacher, Noreen Smith, and thought she did such a nice job explaining chest voice, head voice, and the mix so I thought I would post it.  Noreen, I don't think I could have said it any better myself.

Two of the most commonly used term in singing circles are “Chest Voice” and “Head Voice”. If you’ve always wondered what this actually means, read on….

In the “chest voice” -- the voice most people use to speak with -- people generally feel the resonance of pitches in that area vibrating in their chest. Put your hand on your chest and say the vowel “a” as in “cat” nice and strong -- feel how that seems to resonate between your throat and chest? That’s your chest voice. Then cheer saying, “Woo-hoo!” -- feel how the sound seems to have moved into your head? That’s your head voice.

Now for a more technical explanation: how do the vocal folds work? If you’ve ever seen a picture of the vocal folds in action you’ll see that they are attached at one end in a “V” shape and vibrate together, with the help of breath, along their length to create pitch. (See link below to view video of vocal cords in action). At the pitch “A 440″ (the pitch orchestras tune to) the vocal folds are coming together 440 times/second to create that pitch (the note you hear). Lower pitches have a lower number and pitches up in a singer’s “whistle-tone” register (think Mariah Carey) are vibrating in the 3000′s. When a singer is vocalizing in their chest voice the vocal cords are using their thickest width to create the pitches in that register. Then, at a certain point, the vocal cords have to make a physical shift to reducing the vibrating mass and thickness to create higher pitches. What that means is that the vibrating portion of the vocal folds that is involved in creating the pitch must thin out as the pitches get higher.  Think about how you change pitch with a rubber band.  The lower the desired note, the thicker the vibrating mass of the band will be; the higher the desire pitch, the more you will stretch the band.  Similarly, the voice needs to make a shift to a thinner coordination in the vocal folds as the pitch ascends.  When it comes to bridging from chest to head voice think of the same rubber band experiment:  except that you can only stretch the rubber band so far before you hit a ceiling or break the band (top of your chest voice).  Now stretch the rubber band, but this time, place one finger in the middle of the stretched portion and play the pitch.  Now you’ve “bridged” the band and suddenly have many more higher pitches available without over-straining the vibrating mass.  Do this earlier and you eliminate the chances of breaking the rubber band -- or straining your voice.

The first transition or bridge (also known as passagio), between chest and head voice, generally happens around an E-F# above middle C4 for men and around an Aflat-Bflat above middle C for women. Every singer I’ve ever encountered in my studio struggles at the beginning with either their first or their second bridge, though the first bridge transition is the most common struggle. (Every 4th or augmented 4th interval contains another of these bridges.)

Classical and choral singers tend to sing mostly in their Head Voice. Rock/pop and Musical Theater singers tend to sing in their chest voice without transitioning to a thinner cord, though some can sing in “Mix”, sounding like they are effortlessly taking their chest voice higher in their range. When a singer connects seamlessly between chest voice and head voice, maintaining a consistent tonal quality throughout this transition, this is referred to as “Mix” -- which is just that: a comfortable mix of the elements of chest voice and head voice. To learn more about Mix, watch for my upcoming blog entitled, “BELT vs MIX”.
